Buying dressings in bulk without wasting money
Bulk only saves money if you use the stock before it expires. Work from consumption, not from the discount.
Volume pricing is real, and it only pays if the stock turns over. Expired stock is the most expensive dressing you will ever buy.
Start from consumption
Count what you actually used last quarter, by size. Most organisations discover their usage is concentrated in two or three sizes and everything else is noise.
Then set an order quantity
A sensible target is three to six months of stock for fast-moving sizes and a single inner for slow movers. Beyond six months you are betting against the expiry date.
Inner or carton?
- Inner — the smaller sealed unit inside a carton. Right for a single site with moderate use.
- Carton — the full outer. Right for multi-site groups, distributors, and anywhere with high, steady consumption.
Do not forget storage
A carton needs somewhere cool and dry. If your only storage is a warm cupboard, buy smaller and more often.
