Inner or carton? Understanding trade pack quantities
The terms are used inconsistently across suppliers. Here is what they mean in ours.
Trade quantities confuse buyers because the vocabulary is not standard across suppliers. Always confirm the actual unit count rather than assuming.
The three levels
- Retail pack — the box a consumer buys. For example a pack of 10 dressings.
- Inner — a sealed bundle of retail packs. Ours are typically 12 to 25 retail packs.
- Carton — the full outer shipping unit, made up of multiple inners.
Why it matters
A carton of our 80 × 150mm dressings is 160 retail packs — 1,600 individual dressings. For a single small site that is years of stock. For a care group across several homes it is a sensible order.
Choosing
- Single site, moderate use — order by the inner.
- Multi-site or distributor — order by the carton.
- Unsure — start with inners and step up once you have a quarter of real consumption data.

See a pharmacist, GP or urgent care if a wound will not stop bleeding after ten minutes of firm pressure, is deep or gaping, was caused by something dirty or rusty, contains anything you cannot flush out, or shows spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus or a fever. Get help urgently for animal or human bites, wounds over a joint, and any wound in someone with diabetes or poor circulation.
