How to read a dressing label
Those little symbols are standardised. Here is what each one is telling you.
Medical device packaging uses standardised symbols so that information is readable regardless of language. A few are worth knowing.
Common symbols
- Hourglass — use-by date. After this the sterile barrier is no longer guaranteed.
- LOT — batch number.
- REF — the manufacturer’s product code.
- STERILE EO — sterilised using ethylene oxide. STERILE R means irradiation.
- 2 with a line through it — single use only.
- Open book — consult the instructions for use.
- Factory outline — manufacturer name and address.
- MD — the product is a medical device.
- Broken packaging symbol — do not use if the pack is damaged.
The one people ignore
Do not use if packaging is damaged. A pinhole you cannot see has already ended the sterility, whatever the date says.
See a pharmacist, GP or urgent care if a wound will not stop bleeding after ten minutes of firm pressure, is deep or gaping, was caused by something dirty or rusty, contains anything you cannot flush out, or shows spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus or a fever. Get help urgently for animal or human bites, wounds over a joint, and any wound in someone with diabetes or poor circulation.
