What CE marking on a dressing actually means

It is a regulatory declaration, not a quality award. Here is what it does and does not tell you.

CE marking on a wound dressing means the manufacturer declares the product meets the applicable EU medical device requirements and has followed the required conformity assessment route.

What it does tell you

  • The product is regulated as a medical device rather than a general consumer good.
  • Technical documentation exists covering design, materials, sterilisation and risk.
  • The manufacturer is identifiable and accountable.
  • Labelling and instructions meet defined requirements.

What it does not tell you

It is not a ranking. Two CE-marked dressings can differ substantially in adhesive quality, absorbency and comfort. It is a floor, not a score.

UKCA and the UK market

Post-Brexit the UK introduced UKCA marking, with transitional arrangements that have allowed CE-marked devices to continue being placed on the GB market. The position has been extended more than once, so check the current MHRA guidance rather than relying on a date you read somewhere.

What to look for on a pack

Manufacturer name and address, a lot or batch number, a use-by date, sterilisation method, and the single-use symbol. Missing any of those is a reason for caution.

When to get medical help

See a pharmacist, GP or urgent care if a wound will not stop bleeding after ten minutes of firm pressure, is deep or gaping, was caused by something dirty or rusty, contains anything you cannot flush out, or shows spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus or a fever. Get help urgently for animal or human bites, wounds over a joint, and any wound in someone with diabetes or poor circulation.
